The record you leave the ADF with decides what you can claim for the rest of your life. A separation health examination done properly documents what is actually wrong with you at discharge — before memory, paperwork and time make it harder.
A comprehensive medical assessment at the point of transition out of the ADF, documenting every condition that exists at discharge. It is not a formality and it is not a fitness test. It is the evidentiary baseline for every DVA claim you will ever make.
Backs, knees, shoulders and ankles that have been sore for years get recorded as "nil significant" because nobody asked properly or because the member did not want to delay their discharge.
Validated screening is often not done. A PC-PTSD-5 or K10 score recorded at discharge is contemporaneous evidence; its absence is a gap that is hard to fill later.
The exam happens without anyone reading the service record that precedes it.
Degenerative change that is present and symptomatic goes undocumented because nothing was ordered.
The most common reason a DVA claim is refused is that nothing in the record supports it. A separation health examination is the last opportunity to create that record while you are still serving and while the conditions are still being caused by service. It also feeds directly into CSC classification if medical discharge is in question.
