1 condition in the Repatriation Medical Authority's Statements of Principles list malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland as a factor. If DVA has accepted your malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland, each of these has a documented pathway to a further claim.
Some Statement of Principles factors are not about service at all — they name another condition. Where DVA has already accepted your malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland, and another condition's SoP lists malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland as a factor, that part of the next claim is already established on your file. How a secondary claim works, in full →
Quoted from the instrument. A pathway existing is not the same as a claim succeeding — each factor carries thresholds your record has to satisfy.
RH No. 3 of 2022 · BoP No. 4 of 2022
Reasonable Hypothesis — factor (14): “having a primary or secondary malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland at the time of the clinical onset of hypothyroidism” [clinical onset] — factor (36): “having a primary or secondary malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland at the time of the clinical worsening of hypothyroidism” [worsening]
Balance of Probabilities — factor (13): “having a primary or secondary malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland at the time of the clinical onset of hypothyroidism” [clinical onset] — factor (31): “having a primary or secondary malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland at the time of the clinical worsening of hypothyroidism” [worsening]
If any of these is also on your file, it reaches some of the same conditions malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland does.
A claim is tested against the definition first. If the diagnosis on your file does not meet this wording, the factors below never get reached — so it is worth checking that what your doctor wrote matches what the instrument requires.
Malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland, for the purposes of the Statement of Principles, for the purposes of this Statement of Principles, malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland: (a) means a primary malignant neoplasm arising from the follicular epithelial cells of the thyroid gland; and (b) includes: (i) anaplastic thyroid cancer; (ii) follicular thyroid cancer; (iii) Hurthle cell thyroid cancer; (iv) mixed medullary and follicular thyroid cancer; (v) papillary thyroid cancer; and (vi) thyroid neoplasms of uncertain malignant potential; and (c) excludes: (i) haematolymphoid tumours including Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma; (ii) mesenchymal tumours including soft tissue sarcoma; and (iii) neuroendocrine tumours including medullary thyroid carcinoma. (3) While malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland attracts ICD-10-AM code C73, in applying this Statement of Principles the meaning of malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland is that given in subsection (2). (4) For subsection (3), a reference to an ICD-10-AM code is a reference to the code assigned to a particular kind of injury or disease in The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision, Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM), Tenth Edition, effective date
Aggravation-only factors. In this instrument, subsections 9(12) apply only to material contribution to, or aggravation of, malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland where it was already present before or during service. If service caused malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland outright, those factors are not available to you.

The Statement of Principles for malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland names 1 other condition among its own factors. If any of these is already accepted on your file, it may be the factor that carries a malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland claim — quoted here from the instrument.
Reasonable Hypothesis — factor (7): “having diabetes mellitus for at least 5 years before the clinical onset of malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland” [clinical onset]
