What can I claim secondary to hodgkin lymphoma?

5 conditions in the Repatriation Medical Authority's Statements of Principles list hodgkin lymphoma as a factor. If DVA has accepted your hodgkin lymphoma, each of these has a documented pathway to a further claim.

How a secondary claim works

Some Statement of Principles factors are not about service at all — they name another condition. Where DVA has already accepted your hodgkin lymphoma, and another condition's SoP lists hodgkin lymphoma as a factor, that part of the next claim is already established on your file. Documented pathways

Conditions that list hodgkin lymphoma as a factor

Quoted from the instrument. A pathway existing is not the same as a claim succeeding — each factor carries thresholds your record has to satisfy.

Kaposi sarcoma

RH No. 1 of 2020

Reasonable Hypothesis — factor (3): “having non-Hodgkin lymphoma or chronic lymphocytic leukaemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma before the clinical onset of Kaposi sarcoma” [clinical onset]

This factor appears in the Reasonable Hypothesis instrument only, which applies to operational service.

Malignant melanoma of the skin

RH No. 34 of 2024 · BoP No. 35 of 2024

Reasonable Hypothesis — factor (9): “having non-Hodgkin lymphoma at least one year before clinical onset” [clinical onset]

Balance of Probabilities — factor (7): “having non-Hodgkin lymphoma at least one year before clinical onset” [clinical onset]

Merkel cell carcinoma

RH No. 80 of 2024 · BoP No. 81 of 2024

Reasonable Hypothesis — factor (6): “having non-Hodgkin lymphoma before clinical onset” [clinical onset]

Balance of Probabilities — factor (5): “having non-Hodgkin lymphoma before clinical onset” [clinical onset]

Non-melanoma malignant neoplasm of the skin

RH No. 78 of 2024 · BoP No. 79 of 2024

Reasonable Hypothesis — factor (25): “having non-Hodgkin lymphoma before clinical onset” [clinical onset]

Balance of Probabilities — factor (18): “having non-Hodgkin lymphoma before clinical onset” [clinical onset]

Osteoporosis

RH No. 66 of 2024

Reasonable Hypothesis — factor (6): “having myeloma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma or systemic mastocytosis at the time of clinical onset or clinical worsening” [onset and worsening]

This factor appears in the Reasonable Hypothesis instrument only, which applies to operational service.

Note: systemic mastocytosis is defined in the Schedule 1 - Dictionary.

If any of these is also on your file, it reaches some of the same conditions hodgkin lymphoma does.

Before the factors

What DVA means by hodgkin lymphoma

A claim is tested against the definition first. If the diagnosis on your file does not meet this wording, the factors below never get reached — so it is worth checking that what your doctor wrote matches what the instrument requires.

Hodgkin lymphoma, for the purposes of the Statement of Principles, for the purposes of this Statement of Principles, Hodgkin lymphoma: (a) means a specific group of malignant neoplasms of the lymph nodes and lymphoid tissue derived from B lymphocytes; and (b) includes: (i) nodular sclerosis classical Hodgkin lymphoma; (ii) lymphocyte-rich classical Hodgkin lymphoma; (iii) mixed cellularity classical Hodgkin lymphoma; (iv) lymphocyte-depleted classical Hodgkin lymphoma; and (v) nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma; and (c) excludes non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Note the exclusion. This instrument expressly excludes non-Hodgkin lymphoma. A diagnosis of that is not a diagnosis of hodgkin lymphoma, and a claim framed the wrong way fails on the definition before any factor is considered.

Aggravation-only factors. In this instrument, subsections 9(11) apply only to material contribution to, or aggravation of, hodgkin lymphoma where it was already present before or during service. If service caused hodgkin lymphoma outright, those factors are not available to you.

What could support a claim for hodgkin lymphoma?

The Statement of Principles for hodgkin lymphoma names 1 other condition among its own factors. If any of these is already accepted on your file, it may be the factor that carries a hodgkin lymphoma claim — quoted here from the instrument.

Tuberculosis

Reasonable Hypothesis — factor (10): “having an active tuberculosis disease before the clinical onset of Hodgkin lymphoma” [clinical onset]

Balance of Probabilities — factor (8): “having an active tuberculosis disease before the clinical onset of Hodgkin lymphoma” [clinical onset]
