Otosclerosis
Meaning of otosclerosis: For the purposes of this Statement of Principles, otosclerosis: (a) means a disorder of the ear characterised by abnormal bone remodelling of the otic capsule which can progress towards the stapes resulting in conductive hearing loss, or less commonly towards the cochlea resulting in sensorineural hearing loss; and (b) excludes familial otosclerosis.
Reasonable Hypothesis (RH) — Statement of Principles No. 23 of 2025
At least one of the following factors must as a minimum exist before it can be said that a reasonable hypothesis has been raised connecting otosclerosis or death from otosclerosis with the circumstances of a person's relevant service:
- (1)having infection with measles virus before clinical onset;
- (2)inability to obtain appropriate clinical management for otosclerosis before clinical worsening;
Aggravation-only factors: the factors in subsection 9(2) apply only to material contribution to, or aggravation of, the condition where it was suffered or contracted before or during (but did not arise out of) the person’s relevant service.
Balance of Probabilities (BoP) — Statement of Principles No. 24 of 2025

At least one of the following factor must exist before it can be said that, on the balance of probabilities, otosclerosis or death from otosclerosis is connected with the circumstances of a person's relevant service:
- (1)inability to obtain appropriate clinical management for otosclerosis before clinical worsening;
Aggravation-only factors: the factors in subsection 9(1) apply only to material contribution to, or aggravation of, the condition where it was suffered or contracted before or during (but did not arise out of) the person’s relevant service.
